Shown here are table lamp designs that include digital sculpting and illustration.

For the sleepy boy fishing lamp I wanted a warm bronze look for the sculpted work on the boy and the tree. The art on the shade is my painting "Bandits at the Bank."

Can't say too much about it as it is early in the game but we have hit the road running.
Developing some of my existing art for products with different clients as well as designing new product and illustration to go with them. Looks very promising with good potential for long range opportunities and even a little income to go with all the fun. ---

GRIT was a tabaloid newspaper

when I was aboy spending wonderful summers on my grandparent's farm. They always had GRIT - pretty sure it had cartoons in it then or I wouldn't have noticed it.

Now it is a full fledged full-color magazine - never thought I'd do work for it, but they're running a fun story about pigs in their current issue and asked me to do some illustrations for it.

Something I just dug out of a box of junk...

I accused some friends of playing a hoax when I got this email (in 2005) from the cartoon editor at Playboy Magazine - I mean who ever heard of that magazine contacting an artist? - Most artists would kill to get published there.
Anyhow, an associate got all excited and called the number... he said it was them... I called and got the "Playboy Enterprises" switchboard.
I did reply, told them I was very flattered, thanks, but no thanks.
Anyway I guess it makes a unique conversation piece.

This is from the National Portrait Gallery and was posted on Facebook.

It is so chock-full of the true essence and appreciation of doing art that I had to share it.

Frankly it gave me a renewed appreciation (make that love) for my craft that decades of commercial work can tend to dampen. Immersion into the hustle of deadlines and the indifference - often the callous ignorance - of some clients can make you forget that you aren't doing the work for them, but for those that view the art.

With the internet any art (or image) has gained perpectual longevity. I've actually seen work I did for a publication in 1969 pop up on the 'net (in a portfolio for an ad agency) - it was a drawing of the entrance to a landmark restaurant on Miami Beach.

For years I've had to say to myself on many occasions "this is for the portfolio" - in other words try to go beyond the expectations of your client... the isolation of an artist and constant pressure and bombardment can grind down the spark of creativity.

Constant contact with other creative people is really essential.

(There could be a lot more detail depending on casting method and size)

I think I may have found a foundry in Florida that can do bronzes from computer files.

I'm corresponding with them on the options.

Maybe in some cases I could do a sculpt that is same subject as a painting and offer the sculpts as bronze or as a resin.Offering varying sizes and prices on the prints of the art, there could also be different options/prices on the sculpts.

3D Models, Prototypes and Bronzes

The Ranger

- visualized as a bronze -

(dude and hat modeled in Sculptris, base modeled in Carrara, rendering in Carrara)

Actually a bronze is a bit spendy, but a few years ago I had a "rapid prototype" zcorp procress figurine made from a model I made in Hexagon. I sent that to another service bureau who cast some resin figurines that came out pretty nice, even had a bronzy coloration... I do not like colored figurines, they look like bobble head dolls to me, and while my "Ranger" is still a caricature of sorts, I think he would work as a bronze replica. I have dabbled in western painting (yes gallery stuff) and greeting cards for over 30 years and I still have the dream to do these... dudes, horses, etc.

The Ranger as a painted (bobble-head) figurine - cheezy...

I understand that the company who did the rapid prototype for me now has the ability to take the 3d model directly to resin castings... so, it's all a matter of $$ (what else is new?) I haven't heard of any prototype companies going directly to bronze, but that would still be a really expensive foundary operation, I suppose.

For a free program, this is awesome does some of the stuff the big expensive ones do - FUN - and way simpler to use than those others.
